ORIENTALISM IN LITERATURE: A CRITICAL EXAMINATION

Orientalism in literature refers to the depiction and portrayal of Eastern societies by Western writers. This phenomenon, significantly analyzed by Edward Said in his seminal work "Orientalism" (1978), reveals how Western authors have historically represented the East in ways that emphasize exoticism, mystique, and cultural inferiority. This article explores the roots and evolution of Orientalism in literature, its implications, and the critiques it has generated, aiming to shed light on how literary Orientalism has shaped perceptions and misperceptions of Eastern cultures.
