This article explores the earliest stage of English literary history, known as the Old English period. It examines the development of literature between the 5th and 11th centuries, reflecting the social and cultural life of the Anglo-Saxons and the influence of Christianity. The study discusses epic works like Beowulf, the contributions of poets such as Caedmon and Cynewulf, and King Alfred’s educational reforms. It emphasizes how Old English literature, through alliteration, kennings, and heroic ideals, laid the foundation for later English literary achievements.
