DEVELOPING HIGHER-ORDER THINKING SKILLS OF HIGHER EDUCATION LEARNERS

The development of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) has become a central objective in higher education due to the increasing demands of the knowledge-based economy and the need for graduates who can think critically, solve complex problems, and make informed decisions. This article explores the concept of higher-order thinking, its theoretical foundations, and effective pedagogical strategies for fostering HOTS among higher education learners. Drawing on established educational theories and empirical studies, the paper highlights the role of active learning, problem-based instruction, assessment practices, and teacher facilitation in enhancing learners’ cognitive engagement. The findings suggest that purposeful instructional design and learner-centered approaches significantly contribute to the development of higher-order thinking in university settings.
