NEGATION IN DISCOURSE AND COMMUNICATION: FUNCTIONAL, PRAGMATIC, AND CONTEXTUAL DIMENSIONS
Main Article Content
Аннотация:
This article examines the functional, pragmatic, and contextual aspects of negation in English and Uzbek discourse. Negation is not only a grammatical operation but also a discourse strategy used to express stance, politeness, disagreement, irony, and emotional tone. The study analyzes how negation contributes to communicative intent and meaning construction within real discourse, considering the influence of linguistic typology, context, and speaker intention. Data from spoken and written texts illustrate that while English relies heavily on syntactic markers such as not, no, and negative auxiliaries, Uzbek employs morphological affixes like -ma/-me and prosodic cues to shape communicative effect. The findings highlight that negation functions as a powerful pragmatic tool, serving not only to deny propositions but also to construct interpersonal relations and discourse coherence.
