A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF VOWEL QUALITY IN ENGLISH: THE TENSE -LAX DICHOTOMY

This scholarly article undertakes an exhaustive examination of the phonetic and phonological properties of the tense-lax vowel contrast in English. While commonly conflated with a simple long-short distinction, this dichotomy represents a complex interplay of articulatory gestures (muscular tension, Advanced/Retracted Tongue Root), acoustic characteristics (relative duration and extreme formant values), and strict phonotactic distribution rules. The article provides a detailed technical analysis of the articulatory and acoustic mechanisms underpinning this contrast. Furthermore, it addresses the persistent theoretical debate regarding the precise phonetic correlate of tenseness and highlights the significant challenges this feature presents for Second Language (L2) learners, particularly those whose native languages lack this crucial phonological distinction.
