PAPER-BASED VERSUS COMPUTER-DELIVERED IELTS: EFFECTS OF TEST MODE ON WRITING QUALITY, TIMING, AND COGNITIVE LOAD

This article examines the effects of test delivery mode such as paper-based IELTS and computer-delivered IELTS on candidates’ academic writing performance. With the increasing global shift toward digital assessment, understanding how test mode influences writing quality, time management, and cognitive load has become essential for ensuring test fairness and validity. The study focuses primarily on IELTS Academic Writing Task 2, as it carries greater weighting in the overall writing score and requires complex cognitive and linguistic processing. Additionally, it learns how differences in writing medium, such as handwriting versus typing, on-screen editing, and visual interface design, affect candidates’ planning strategies, revision behavior, and language production. Drawing on theories of cognitive load and mode effect in language testing, the study argues that computer-delivered testing may alter attentional resources, either facilitating performance through efficient editing tools or increasing cognitive demands for candidates with limited digital literacy.
