THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH BALLADS: FOLK TRADITIONS AND THEMES
Main Article Content
Abstract:
The evolution of English (Anglo-Scottish) folk ballads from oral tradition and broadside print to contemporary research and popular culture is examined in this article. It discusses the main themes that reoccur in English balladry (love, death, supernatural, social commentary), the modes of transmission (oral, print, revival), and the part folk culture plays in the creation of ballads. The piece also examines how folk tradition and print culture interact in the development of ballads, drawing on important studies like David Atkinson's The English Traditional Ballad: Theory, Method, and Practice and materials from the English Folk Dance & Song Society (EFDSS).
