THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON LANGUAGE

Main Article Content

Abstract:

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit have fundamentally transformed human communication, influencing not only what we say but also how we say it. This article examines the multifaceted impact of social media on language, exploring lexical, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic changes. We analyze how social media fosters the creation of neologisms, abbreviations, and slang, how it simplifies syntactic structures, and how meaning shifts with context. We also discuss the role of algorithms in shaping language (“algospeak”), code‑switching practices, and the formation of online identity and community discourses. Furthermore, we assess both positive and negative consequences of these linguistic changes for education, cultural identity, and intergenerational communication. Finally, the article offers recommendations for language educators, policymakers, and researchers to better understand and harness the linguistic transformations brought by social media.
