This study examines the pivotal evolution of narrative technique in the English novel throughout the 18th century. By analyzing the works of key authors from Henry Fielding to Laurence Sterne, the research traces the transformation of the narrator from an external, omniscient, and morally authoritative chronicler into a complex, often ambiguous vehicle for psychological exploration. The investigation argues that this journey—marked by the rise of the epistolary form, the introspective experiments of sentimentalism, and the emergence of techniques like free indirect discourse—fundamentally reoriented the novel’s purpose. This narrative revolution shifted the genre’s focus from the depiction of social types within a moral framework to the nuanced representation of individual consciousness, thereby laying the formal groundwork for the psychological realism of the nineteenth-century novel.
