CHANGES IN SOIL CONDITIONS AND IRRIGATION SYSTEMS IN THE FERGANA VALLEY DURING SOVIET PERIOD (THE CASE OF ANDIZHAN REGION)

This article examines the Soviet-era transformation of soil conditions and irrigation systems in the Fergana Valley, with a focus on the Andizhan region as a case study. It situates the analysis within broader Soviet agricultural modernization policies, emphasizing the drive for cotton monoculture that restructured the region’s hydro-agricultural systems. Through archival materials and historical accounts, the study demonstrates how extensive irrigation, land reclamation, and canal construction engineered a dual legacy of economic integration and ecological crisis. While these policies boosted cotton yields and consolidated the region’s role in the Soviet economy, they also disrupted hydrological balances, intensified soil salinization, depleted water resources, and accelerated long-term land degradation. The findings underscore the unsustainable trajectory of Soviet modernization in Central Asia and highlight the Andizhan case as a critical lens for understanding the political ecology of irrigation-based agriculture under state socialism.

TECHNOLOGY OF USING AQUATIC PLANTS FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT IN THE CONDITIONS OF KARAKALPAKSTAN

At a time when urbanization is growing rapidly and the level of environmental pollution is increasing, the problem of wastewater treatment remains particularly urgent. Located on the border of desert and irrigated lands, Karakalpakstan faces serious challenges in the field of ecology. The gradual accumulation of toxic substances in water bodies and sources of drinking water has a negative impact on the health and ecosystems of the people of the region. Biofiltration using aquatic plants is an efficient and sustainable method of wastewater treatment. This process involves using the natural functions of plants to remove pollutants from water. This approach not only reduces the stress on a traditional wastewater treatment plant, but also promotes landscaping, improves water quality, and restores ecosystems. In this article, we will consider the principles of biofiltration, the possibilities of its application in Karakalpakstan, as well as the benefits and difficulties that may arise on the way to the introduction of this technology.
