This article explores the semantic and structural characteristics of toponyms. It examines the significance of toponyms within the language system and scientifically substantiates their nominative, identificational, and cultural-informational functions.

It is thought that ethnotoponyms, which are widespread in many parts of the country, especially in the Bukhara region, are expressed on the basis of totemistic views. Racial, tribal, social, economic, cultural, religious and linguistic characteristics of the people are determined. A special group of popular names in the Uzbek dictionary is totem-based toponyms. Place names based on totemistic views have been analyzed ethnically, linguistically. Lexical-semantic, etymological features of some ethnotoponyms are expressed.

The article analyzes the composition of place names belonging to the Syrdarya region. The influence of suffixes in the formation of toponyms of the Syrdarya region, in particular, the role and importance of word-forming suffixes and their dictionary meanings are discussed. The explanatory dictionary of toponyms of Syrdarya region served as the main source of the article.

Phraseological units based on specific historical events and facts are opened and explained here. The author suggests two major groups for the presence of real place names in phraseological units. The toponymic properties of real toponyms in the sense of the corresponding noun and phraseological unit have also been identified. There are also additional connotations of toponyms that affect the meaning of phraseological units. Examples are taken from a number of phraseological and paremiological dictionaries in English and Uzbek. Examples are analyzed by descriptive and comparative methods. Similarities and differences are identified based on the national and cultural characteristics of the two languages.
