THE IMPACT OF EXTENSIVE READING ON IMPROVING STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC WRITING SKILLS

This study investigates the impact of extensive reading on the development of students’ academic writing skills within the framework of integrated reading-writing pedagogy. Extensive reading is widely recognized for improving vocabulary growth, grammatical accuracy, and the acquisition of rhetorical structures. However, its direct influence on academic writing performance requires further empirical clarification. Using a mixed-method design, the study collected quantitative data from pre- and post-tests measuring writing proficiency and qualitative data from student reflections. Results demonstrate significant improvements in lexical richness, coherence, cohesion, and syntactic variety among students who engaged in regular extensive reading activities over eight weeks. The findings support theoretical claims that reading exposure strengthens writers’ internal models of text organization, enabling more effective production of academic prose. The study concludes that extensive reading is a powerful, low-cost pedagogical tool that contributes meaningfully to writing development in secondary and tertiary English language classrooms.

PAPER-BASED VERSUS COMPUTER-DELIVERED IELTS: EFFECTS OF TEST MODE ON WRITING QUALITY, TIMING, AND COGNITIVE LOAD

This article examines the effects of test delivery mode such as paper-based IELTS and computer-delivered IELTS on candidates’ academic writing performance. With the increasing global shift toward digital assessment, understanding how test mode influences writing quality, time management, and cognitive load has become essential for ensuring test fairness and validity. The study focuses primarily on IELTS Academic Writing Task 2, as it carries greater weighting in the overall writing score and requires complex cognitive and linguistic processing. Additionally, it learns how differences in writing medium, such as handwriting versus typing, on-screen editing, and visual interface design, affect candidates’ planning strategies, revision behavior, and language production. Drawing on theories of cognitive load and mode effect in language testing, the study argues that computer-delivered testing may alter attentional resources, either facilitating performance through efficient editing tools or increasing cognitive demands for candidates with limited digital literacy.

“STUDENT PERCEPTIONS OF AI FEEDBACK IN WRITING: INSIGHTS FROM A CLASSROOM EXPERIMENT”

As artificial intelligence (AI) tools become increasingly integrated into educational settings, their role in writing instruction has garnered growing interest. This study investigates student perceptions of AI-generated feedback on academic writing within a higher education classroom. Through a mixed-methods classroom experiment involving undergraduate students, we examined how learners responded to AI feedback compared to traditional teacher feedback. Data were collected via pre- and post-intervention surveys, focus group discussions, and analysis of students' writing revisions. The findings indicate that while students appreciated the immediacy, consistency, and detailed nature of AI feedback, they also expressed concerns regarding its limitations in understanding nuance, context, and emotional tone. Notably, students viewed AI as a complementary tool rather than a replacement for human instruction. The study provides insights into how AI feedback can be effectively integrated into writing pedagogy and suggests design considerations for AI writing assistants in educational contexts.

TEACHING ENGLISH IN ACADEMIC LYCEUMS

Teaching English in academic lyceums requires a methodology that balances exam-oriented outcomes with deeper communicative competence and academic language development. In the Uzbek context, academic lyceums typically serve as an upper-secondary bridge toward university study, so English instruction must support both general proficiency and subject-oriented literacy: reading academic texts, producing structured writing, participating in discussions, and using learning strategies independently.

TEACHING COHERENCE AND COHESION IN ACADEMIC WRITING

Academic writing requires more than grammatical accuracy; it demands clarity, logical organization, and effective textual connectivity. Coherence and cohesion play central roles in achieving these qualities, as coherence ensures the logical flow of ideas, while cohesion provides linguistic devices that link sentences and paragraphs. This article examines the theoretical foundations of coherence and cohesion, analyzes their pedagogical importance, and discusses practical strategies for teaching them in academic contexts. It further highlights the challenges teachers face, including cultural differences in rhetorical traditions, overuse of cohesive markers, and curriculum constraints. Through scholarly perspectives and classroom-based examples, the paper argues that effective instruction in coherence and cohesion equips students with the ability to construct clear, persuasive, and academically credible texts.

DIFFERENCES IN ACADEMIC WRITING ACROSS CULTURES

It is widely acknowledged that English has become the dominant language of academic communication in recent decades, with its role as an academic lingua franca being more prominent than ever before. As evidence of this trend, it has been reported that "more than 90 per cent of the journal literature in some scientific domains is printed in English" (Hyland, 2006, 24). This widespread use of English in academic publishing has undoubtedly shaped the global landscape of scholarly exchange, creating an environment in which English has become the preferred medium for communicating research findings, ideas, and innovations across a wide array of disciplines.
