THE INFLUENCE OF FRENCH ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The influence of French on the evolution of the English language represents one of the most decisive phases in its historical development. Following the Norman Conquest of 1066, Anglo-Norman French became the language of administration, law, literature, and the aristocracy, while English persisted among the general population. Over several centuries, intense bilingual contact led to profound lexical borrowing, particularly in domains such as governance, jurisprudence, religion, warfare, education, cuisine, fashion, and abstract thought. This contact also affected English morphology and stylistics: many native terms were replaced or semantically narrowed, and Romance affixation patterns entered Middle English word-formation. The gradual re-emergence of English as the dominant public language in the late Middle Ages did not reverse French influence; rather, it resulted in a layered lexicon where Germanic and Romance items co-exist with distinct stylistic and register implications. Thus, French did not merely enrich the vocabulary of English but contributed structurally and functionally to its transformation from a predominantly Germanic idiom into a hybridized, highly stratified lexicon characteristic of Modern English.

WORLD ENGLISHES AND THEIR IMPACT ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

This article explores the concept of World Englishes and its impact on English language learning, particularly in the context of second language acquisition (SLA). As English has diversified across global contexts, regionally distinct varieties have emerged, challenging traditional notions of a singular, standard English. The paper examines how this linguistic plurality influences learners’ goals, attitudes, and identities, as well as the challenges it poses for English language teaching (ELT). It argues for a pedagogical shift that embraces linguistic diversity, promotes intercultural communicative competence, and prioritizes mutual intelligibility over native-like proficiency. By integrating World Englishes into language education, learners are better prepared to engage with English as a dynamic, global means of communication.

THE INFLUENCE OF NATIVE LANGUAGE ON ENGLISH GRAMMAR ACQUISITION

The acquisition of English grammar by second language learners is significantly influenced by the structural, typological, and cognitive properties of their native language. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as native language influence or cross-linguistic transfer, has been widely examined within the field of second language acquisition. The present thesis explores how native language structures affect learners’ acquisition of English grammatical features such as tense, aspect, word order, articles, and prepositions. Drawing on empirical findings from contrastive analysis, error analysis, and interlanguage studies, the thesis demonstrates that native language influence can both facilitate and hinder English grammar acquisition depending on the degree of similarity between the native language and English. The study synthesizes established research to highlight pedagogical implications for teaching English grammar to multilingual learners.

COMPARING WORD ORDER IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK SENTENCES

Word order plays a crucial role in sentence structure, meaning, and clarity in any language. English and Uzbek differ significantly in this aspect: English and Uzbek differ significantly in word order: English follows SVO, while Uzbek primarily uses SOV. This difference influences sentence formation and emphasis. These differences affect emphasis, sentence interpretation, and overall communication strategies. In English, altering word order can lead to ungrammatical sentences or change the intended meaning. In contrast, Uzbek allows for greater flexibility, enabling speakers to shift emphasis without losing grammatical correctness. This paper explores the fundamental differences between English and Uzbek word order, examining their impact on sentence formation, emphasis, and question structures. Understanding these distinctions is essential for linguists, translators, and language learners seeking to master both languages.

UNDERSTANDING PARTS OF SPEECH IN CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH GRAMMAR

This article examines the fundamental grammatical categories that form the structural basis of the English language. The annotation outlines the main theoretical approaches to classifying parts of speech, including traditional grammar, structural linguistics, and modern functional-semantic models. The study highlights how English parts of speech are identified through a combination of semantic, morphological, and syntactic criteria, and it explains the challenges that arise from the analytical nature of English, which has limited inflectional morphology. Special attention is given to the distinction between major (open-class) categories such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, and minor (closed-class) categories such as prepositions, conjunctions, determiners, and pronouns. The annotation also discusses debates in modern linguistics regarding borderline categories, conversion, and the flexibility of word classes in contemporary English usage. This theme serves as an essential theoretical foundation for understanding English grammar, language description, and linguistic analysis in both academic and practical contexts.
