THE PHONETICS OF DISCOURSE MARKERS IN ENGLISH CONVERSATION

Discourse markers play an important role in the coherence of discourse and facilitate communication. It has been also argued that EFL students need not only the grammatical competence but also discourse knowledge to be able to effectively maintain a conversation. Therefore, the present study investigates the use and functions of discourse markers as used by EFL students at Faculty of Social Sciences in Kuwait. It also aims to investigate the differences between high and low proficient learners in using such discourse markers. The study adopts the Fung and Carter‟s (2007) model in which the discourse markers are classified into four categories, namely, interpersonal, structural, inferential and cognitive.

THE PORTRAYAL OF WOMEN IN CRIME AND INVESTIGATION DISCOURSE: AN ENGLISH–UZBEK COMPARATIVE VIEW

This article presents a comparative discourse-oriented analysis of the portrayal of women in English and Uzbek crime and investigation narratives. The study examines how female characters are constructed through narrative roles, communicative behavior, and ideological functions within detective discourse. The material is based on selected English and Uzbek detective texts representing different cultural traditions. The research reveals that English crime discourse predominantly constructs female images through rational agency, institutional participation, and pragmatic restraint, whereas Uzbek discourse foregrounds emotional dominance, moral authority, and collective social responsibility. Despite these differences, universal narrative functions of women as victims, witnesses, and ethical catalysts are preserved across both traditions. The findings contribute to gender linguistics, comparative discourse studies, and literary stylistics.

THE ROLE OF DISCOURSE MARKERS IN PRAGMATIC LINGUISTICS AND COMPARATIVE ANALYSES

Discourse markers (DMs) are crucial elements in pragmatic linguistics, facilitating coherence, cohesion, and structuring spoken and written discourse. They function as cues for listeners and readers, guiding interpretation and discourse flow. This paper explores the role of discourse markers from a comparative perspective, analyzing their usage in English, Uzbek, and Russian. The study examines syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of DMs, shedding light on their influence in different linguistic contexts. The comparative analysis highlights both universal functions and language-specific characteristics, contributing to a broader understanding of cross-linguistic pragmatics. Additionally, this study explores the cognitive processing of discourse markers, their sociolinguistic implications, and their role in intercultural communication.

DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF TEACHER–STUDENT INTERACTION IN ENGLISH CLASSROOMS

This thesis explores the discourse patterns that emerge in teacher–student interaction within English language classrooms. Drawing on established models of classroom discourse, particularly the Initiation–Response–Feedback (IRF) structure and interactional sociolinguistics, the study examines how teachers’ linguistic choices shape participation, learning opportunities, and power relations in instructional settings. The analysis is grounded in empirical findings from previous discourse-analytic studies conducted in second language classrooms. By synthesizing existing research, the thesis highlights the pedagogical implications of discourse practices for effective language teaching and learner engagement.

NEGATION IN DISCOURSE AND COMMUNICATION: FUNCTIONAL, PRAGMATIC, AND CONTEXTUAL DIMENSIONS

This article examines the functional, pragmatic, and contextual aspects of negation in English and Uzbek discourse. Negation is not only a grammatical operation but also a discourse strategy used to express stance, politeness, disagreement, irony, and emotional tone. The study analyzes how negation contributes to communicative intent and meaning construction within real discourse, considering the influence of linguistic typology, context, and speaker intention. Data from spoken and written texts illustrate that while English relies heavily on syntactic markers such as not, no, and negative auxiliaries, Uzbek employs morphological affixes like -ma/-me and prosodic cues to shape communicative effect. The findings highlight that negation functions as a powerful pragmatic tool, serving not only to deny propositions but also to construct interpersonal relations and discourse coherence.

PHRASEOGRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS IN SCIENTIFIC DISCOURSE

The main objective of this research is to provide a systematic phraseographic description of phraseological units used in scientific discourse. The study examines how such units are identified, classified, defined, and represented in phraseographic sources, with particular attention to their semantic structure, functional specificity, and contextual usage in scientific texts. Existing linguistic studies on phraseology and phraseography are reviewed in order to demonstrate different scholarly approaches to the description of phraseological units within scientific discourse. The relevance of this research lies in the fact that phraseological units, despite their stable structure, exhibit specific functional and semantic features in scientific texts that require accurate lexicographic and phraseographic treatment. The research tasks include clarifying the criteria for selecting phraseological units in scientific discourse, determining their typological characteristics, and analyzing methods of their phraseographic representation. To achieve these aims, the study employs a range of linguistic and interdisciplinary methods, including descriptive analysis, componential and semantic analysis, contextual analysis, and elements of communicative and functional linguistics.

FUNCTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE OF PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS IN HISTORICAL-SCIENTIFIC WRITTEN SOURCES

This article examines the functional role of phraseological units in historical-scientific written sources, focusing on how these stable linguistic constructions contribute to the conceptual, cognitive, and stylistic organization of scholarly discourse. By analyzing a range of historical scientific texts, the study reveals how phraseological units encode culturally conditioned knowledge, preserve disciplinary traditions, and support the transmission of scientific ideas across time. Special attention is given to their methodological functions – such as framing arguments, structuring scientific explanation, and shaping domain-specific terminology. The research also identifies the mechanisms through which certain phraseological expressions undergo semantic stabilization, re-interpretation, or terminologization within scientific discourse. The findings highlight the importance of phraseological units as carriers of disciplinary memory and as tools for maintaining the continuity of scientific thought.
